The Salt Road: An Upper Dolpo Expedition

A four-week expedition into Upper Dolpo, crossing the Numa La and Baga La passes to reach Shey Gompa, Saldang, and the last places where the trans-Himalayan salt trade is still part of daily life.

23 Days / 22 Nights Physical Grading 5 out of 5 5,360 m (Kang La) Upper Dolpo, Dolpa & Rara Lake Region, Nepal
Starting from $3,800 per person

Overview

Our definitive Upper Dolpo itinerary, built around Nepal's full elevation range in one continuous line: two days in Kathmandu, then a flight to Nepalgunj and on to Juphal, Dolpa's only airstrip, before continuing on foot into one of the last places in Nepal where the trans-Himalayan salt trade, Bon and Buddhist coexistence, and genuine snow leopard habitat are still part of daily life rather than history.

From Juphal, the trek proper begins up the Thuli Bheri and Suli Gad valleys, past Shey Phoksundo Lake, over the Kang La pass to Shey Gompa, and on to the salt-route villages of Saldang and Namdo before crossing the Numa La and Baga La passes into the Tarap valley. Four disciplinary threads run through the trip: anthropology, conservation biology, religious studies, and geology.

Unlike a standard trekking itinerary, several days are held specifically for genuine encounters rather than sightseeing: a ranger-led conservation session at Shey Phoksundo National Park, a homestay night hosted by a Dolpo-pa family in Saldang, and a fireside salt-trade oral history evening with people who still remember the caravan trade before the border closed.

Highlights

  • A genuine multi-day flight-and-trek approach through Nepalgunj and Juphal, Dolpa's only airstrip, before the trek proper begins
  • A ranger-led field session on snow leopard and blue sheep conservation at Shey Phoksundo National Park
  • Two full days at Shey Gompa, including time with the resident monastic community, not a single-night pass-through
  • A homestay night with a Dolpo-pa family in Saldang, alongside a fireside evening on the Tibet–Nepal salt trade with people who remember it firsthand
  • Both major passes — Numa La and Baga La — crossed on the way into the Tarap valley, completing the full circuit rather than an out-and-back
  • A closing reflection session in Kathmandu, not just a farewell dinner — time to connect what was learned across four weeks and four disciplines

Essential Gear

  • Sleeping bag rated to −15 °C or colder — Shey Gompa and the Saldang homestay are both cold and unheated
  • Full mountaineering-adjacent layering system for Kang La, Numa La, and Baga La
  • Trekking poles and sturdy, broken-in boots for four weeks on the trail
  • Headlamp with spare batteries
  • Water purification tablets or filter
  • Cash for the entire expedition — no ATMs after leaving Nepalgunj, and Upper Dolpo has none at all

Good to Know

  • Upper Dolpo is a restricted region requiring a special permit and a minimum group size — confirm current rules and fees with your operator when booking, since they change periodically.
  • This is a genuine expedition, not a standard teahouse trek: basic guesthouses, homestays, and camping are used through the remote sections, and the pace is built around four weeks in the field.
  • Two major passes above 5,000 m (Kang La, then Numa La and Baga La together on a single day) demand real altitude discipline; know the AMS symptoms and never push with worsening symptoms.
  • The homestay night in Saldang and the community time in Tarap are genuine cultural exchange, not staged performances — guests should approach them with the same respect they would want shown to their own home.
  • Insurance must cover trekking above 5,500 m and helicopter evacuation from one of Nepal's most remote regions, where rescue timelines are longer than almost anywhere else in the country.
  • The Nepalgunj–Juphal flight sector is genuinely weather-dependent; the itinerary holds buffer days at both ends of the trip specifically to absorb these delays without forcing a missed international flight home.
