The Dhaulagiri Circuit

A full circuit around the world's seventh-highest peak, crossing French Pass and Dhampus Pass above 5,200 m — closer to expedition mountaineering than standard trekking.

18 Days / 17 Nights Physical Grading 5 out of 5 (Extreme) 5,360 m (French Pass) Dhaulagiri Region, Nepal
Starting from $3,200 per person

Overview

The most technically demanding itinerary in our catalog: a full circuit around Dhaulagiri, the world's seventh-highest peak, crossing the Chonbarban Glacier and two passes above 5,200 m — French Pass and Dhampus Pass — before descending into the Kali Gandaki valley at Jomsom. This is closer to expedition mountaineering than standard trekking, and we say so plainly rather than softening it.

The approach climbs steadily from Darbang through Muri, Boghara, and Dobang to Italian Base Camp and on to Dhaulagiri Base Camp itself, at the foot of the Chonbarban Glacier. From there the route turns genuinely alpine: French Pass leads into the stark, high-altitude basin of Hidden Valley, and Dhampus Pass leads back out on the far side, descending to Yak Kharka and Jomsom in the Kali Gandaki valley.

Full camping support is required for the entire high-altitude section — there are no teahouses between Italian Base Camp and Yak Kharka — and both passes demand real winter mountaineering conditions: crampons, and occasionally fixed rope, depending on the season's snow. Weather-contingency days are built in at both Dhaulagiri Base Camp and Hidden Valley, since this route has a real history of trekkers being stormbound for several days waiting for a safe window to cross.

Highlights

  • A complete circuit around Dhaulagiri, the world's seventh-highest peak, rather than an out-and-back to a single viewpoint
  • The Chonbarban Glacier and Dhaulagiri Base Camp, with the mountain's full south face directly overhead
  • Two passes above 5,200 m in succession — French Pass and Dhampus Pass — connected by the high alpine basin of Hidden Valley
  • A genuine wilderness section with no teahouses for over a week, fully supported by camping crew and kitchen staff
  • A dramatic descent into the Kali Gandaki valley at Jomsom, connecting two entirely different sides of the Himalaya in one trek
  • One of Nepal's least-crowded major routes — this circuit sees a fraction of the traffic of the Everest or Annapurna treks

Essential Gear

  • Crampons and, depending on the season's snow, fixed-rope familiarity for both French Pass and Dhampus Pass
  • Full expedition-weight sleeping bag and insulated camping gear — there are no teahouses between Italian Base Camp and Yak Kharka
  • Mountaineering ice axe and trekking poles
  • High-altitude down suit or equivalent layering system for camp above 4,750 m
  • Sleeping mat rated for below-freezing ground temperatures
  • Water purification suitable for glacial melt water

Good to Know

  • This is closer to expedition mountaineering than standard trekking, and the physical grading (5 out of 5, Extreme) reflects that honestly rather than softening it for marketing.
  • Full camping support — tents, kitchen crew, and porters — is required for the entire section between Italian Base Camp and Yak Kharka.
  • Both weather-contingency days (Dhaulagiri Base Camp and Hidden Valley) are real planning margin, not padding: this route has a genuine history of trekkers being stormbound for several days waiting for a safe window to cross.
  • Insurance must cover technical trekking above 5,500 m and helicopter evacuation from a genuinely remote glacier environment.
  • October–November offers the most settled post-monsoon weather for the pass crossings; spring conditions are more variable and should be confirmed with your guide closer to departure.
