Everest Base Camp Trek

The classic teahouse trek to the foot of the world's highest mountain, with two full acclimatization days built in.

13 Days / 12 Nights Challenging Kala Patthar (5,545 m) Khumbu Region, Nepal
Starting from $1,595 $1,750 per person

Overview

A well-balanced 13-day schedule to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) and the Kala Patthar viewpoint (5,545 m) — two proper acclimatization days on the way up, every sleeping-altitude gain kept within safe limits, and a relaxed three-stage descent instead of one long push back to Lukla.

The route climbs the Dudh Koshi valley through Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa capital, then Tengboche Monastery, the spiritual heart of Khumbu, before the high alpine villages of Dingboche and Lobuche lead to Gorak Shep, the highest sleeping point of the trek, and Base Camp itself.

Highlights

  • Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) beneath the Khumbu Icefall
  • Sunrise from Kala Patthar (5,545 m), the trek's true Everest viewpoint
  • Tengboche Monastery, the spiritual heart of the Khumbu, and its afternoon prayer ceremony
  • Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa capital, with bakeries, gear shops, and the Sherpa Culture Museum
  • Nangkartshang Peak acclimatization hike above Dingboche, with views of Makalu and Ama Dablam's north face
  • The Thukla Pass memorial area, a field of chortens for climbers who died on Everest

13 days on the trail, mapped one by one — no need to expand anything.

Day of 13

Day 1

Kathmandu to Lukla (fly), trek to Phakding

Day 1

Kathmandu to Lukla (fly), trek to Phakding

Overnight: Phakding

After the dramatic landing at Tenzing-Hillary Airport, the trail descends gently out of Lukla, following the Dudh Koshi river past mani walls, prayer wheels, and the first suspension bridges. A deliberately short day — arrive in Phakding by early afternoon. Phakding lodges range from simple tea houses to comfortable riverside hotels with hot showers; rooms here are inexpensive since you are still low.

Day 1 of 13

Altitude: Kathmandu 1,400 m → Lukla 2,840 m → Phakding 2,610 m
Time: ~8 km, 3–4 hours
Overnight: Phakding

Always pass mani stones and chortens on their left (clockwise), per Buddhist custom.

Day 2

Phakding to Namche Bazaar

Day 2

Phakding to Namche Bazaar

Overnight: Namche Bazaar

Enter Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo (permit check), pass Jorsale, and cross the high Hillary Suspension Bridge before the relentless ~600 m 'Namche hill.' Roughly halfway up, a clearing offers your first glimpse of Everest on a clear day. Namche is the Sherpa capital: gear shops, pharmacies, the last reliable ATMs, espresso, and famous bakeries.

Day 2 of 13

Phakding to Namche Bazaar

Altitude: 2,610 m → 3,440 m (+830 m)
Time: ~10–11 km, 6–7 hours

Acclimatization day in Dingboche

Overnight: Dingboche

The steep ridge climb directly above Dingboche is one of the best acclimatization hikes in Nepal: Makalu to the east, Ama Dablam's north face, Island Peak, and the entire Imja Valley. Go as high as feels comfortable — even partway helps. Afternoon: rest, hydrate (3–4 liters per day), and eat well even if appetite is fading — that is normal at altitude.

Overnight: Gorak Shep

Follow the moraine crest to Gorak Shep (2–3 hours), the last settlement, drop your bag and eat lunch, then continue across rocky glacier terrain to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m). The famous boulder marks the spot; in spring climbing season a tent city sprawls across the ice. The views of the Khumbu Icefall are the highlight — Everest's summit itself is hidden from Base Camp.

Pheriche to Kyangjuma

Overnight: Kyangjuma

The longest distance day, but almost all descent: down the valley to Pangboche, through the forest to Deboche and Tengboche for a last look at the monastery, down the big hill to Phunki Tenga, and back up onto the balcony trail to Kyangjuma — small lodges with some of the best Ama Dablam views on the trail.

Kyangjuma to Monjo

Overnight: Monjo

An easy morning through Namche — last chance for the bakeries and gear shops — then the long descent off the Namche hill, back across the Hillary Suspension Bridge, through Jorsale and the park exit checkpoint to Monjo. Splitting the descent here makes the final two days genuinely relaxed.

Reconfirm your flight with your lodge or airline office the evening you arrive.

Day 13

Fly Lukla to Kathmandu

Day 13

Fly Lukla to Kathmandu

Morning flights are far more reliable — afternoon departures are frequently cancelled as clouds build over the Dudh Koshi valley. In peak season you will likely fly from Ramechhap and drive back to Kathmandu.

Day 13 of 13

Fly Lukla to Kathmandu

Time: ~35 min flight (direct) or ~20 min to Ramechhap plus a 4–5 hour drive

Morning flights are far more reliable — afternoon departures are frequently cancelled as clouds build over the Dudh Koshi valley. In peak season you will likely fly from Ramechhap and drive back to Kathmandu.

Essential Gear

  • Sleeping bag rated to −15 °C or colder
  • Trekking poles for the long descents
  • Water purification tablets or filter
  • Category 3–4 sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm
  • Headlamp with spare batteries for the Kala Patthar pre-dawn start
  • Microspikes are useful in winter and early spring above Dingboche

Good to Know

  • Getting to Lukla: in peak season (Oct–Nov, Mar–May) most flights are moved to Ramechhap (Manthali), a 4–5 hour pre-dawn drive from Kathmandu — confirm your departure airport when booking. Off-season, direct Kathmandu–Lukla flights (~35 min) are more common.
  • Build 1–2 buffer days into your trip after Day 13 and never book an international connection for the same day you fly out of Lukla. Shared helicopter shuttles (~USD 400–500/seat) operate when planes are grounded.
  • Rooms are cheap on the expectation you eat dinner and breakfast where you sleep — this is firm teahouse etiquette. There are no ATMs beyond Namche; budget roughly NPR 4,000–6,000 per day for food and lodging up high.
  • Booking ahead matters most at Tengboche, Lobuche, and especially Gorak Shep in October–November and April.
  • Know the AMS symptoms (headache, nausea, dizziness, poor sleep). Never ascend with worsening symptoms — descending is the cure. Free altitude talks run at the HRA clinic in Pheriche in season.
  • Insurance must cover trekking above 5,500 m and helicopter evacuation.
  • Typical daily rhythm: wake 6–7 am (4:30 am for Kala Patthar), breakfast, walk with a tea or lunch stop, arrive early-to-mid afternoon, hydrate and rest, order dinner by around 6 pm, sleep by 8–9 pm.
