The Ganesh Himal Trek

A quiet loop to Ganesh Himal Base Camp and the gemstone-panning communities of Ruby Valley, reachable entirely by road from Kathmandu.

14 Days / 13 Nights Physical Grading 4 out of 5 5,106 m (Pangsang La) Ganesh Himal Region, Nepal
Starting from $1,250 per person

Overview

One of Nepal's least-visited trekking regions, reachable entirely by road from Kathmandu — no domestic flights, no restricted-area permits, and genuine solitude within a few days' walk of the capital. A full loop through Tamang mountain villages, an old mining settlement, a high pass, and the gemstone-panning communities of Ruby Valley, closing with views of Ganesh Himal itself.

Ganesh Himal sits close enough to Kathmandu to reach entirely overland, yet remains one of the country's genuinely quiet trekking regions — a full loop rather than an out-and-back, with variety built into the route itself. The trek climbs from Dhading Besi through Tamang farming villages to Somdang, a former mining settlement, then over the Pangsang La to Ganesh Himal's own base camp, with the peak's four summits rising directly ahead.

Rather than retracing the same trail home, the route continues into Ruby Valley, where local Tamang communities still pan for garnet and other semi-precious stones in the rivers, before descending to Trishuli Bazaar and the drive back to Kathmandu.

Highlights

  • A complete loop trek, not an out-and-back — new terrain and villages on the way home, not a retraced trail
  • Tamang mountain villages throughout the route, with a culture and dialect distinct from the more-visited trekking regions
  • Somdang, a former mining settlement en route to the high pass
  • The Pangsang La and Ganesh Himal Base Camp itself, with direct views of Ganesh Himal's four summits
  • Ruby Valley, where Tamang communities still pan local rivers for garnet and other semi-precious stones
  • A genuinely quiet trekking region reachable entirely by road, with no domestic flights or restricted-area permits required

Essential Gear

  • Trekking poles and sturdy boots — the route crosses one high pass and several steep forested stretches
  • Warm layers and a down jacket for the Pangsang La crossing and Base Camp nights
  • Rain shell — the lower Tamang villages catch afternoon showers outside the dry season
  • Water purification tablets or filter
  • Cash for the whole trek — no ATMs once you leave Dhading Besi

Good to Know

  • No domestic flights and no restricted-area permit are required for this route — it is reachable entirely overland from Kathmandu.
  • The Pangsang La crossing at over 5,000 m is the trek's physical high point; standard altitude-awareness guidance applies even on a road-accessible route.
  • Ruby Valley's gemstone panning is a genuine local livelihood, not a staged demonstration for tourists — treat the community time with the same respect as anywhere else on the trail.
  • A licensed guide is required for trekking in Nepal under current regulations.
  • October–November and March–April offer the most stable weather for the Pangsang La crossing; confirm current trail conditions with your guide before booking outside those windows.
